A Holiday Season and New Year
Filled with Optimism, Adventure, and Peace of Mind
This year I had a revelation: while the pace of change in the world seems to be accelerating all around us, the things that make life truly meaningful remain remarkably stable. Progress brings incredible opportunity—and equally incredible uncertainty—but the fundamentals of a good life still revolve around the same timeless anchors: purpose, relationships, generosity, resilience, and gratitude in the everyday moments. I found myself searching for peace of mind by re-reading the stories of people who have already lived full, rich lives, hoping to see with better clarity what actually mattered in the end.
In 30 Lessons for Living, Karl Pillemer captures the collected wisdom of hundreds of America's elders—people who have lived through wars, loss, love, reinvention, economic cycles, and everything in between. Their lessons are refreshingly practical, deeply human, and often surprisingly countercultural. I've re-read this book several times over the years and love how these diverse life experiences ultimately distill into universal wisdom: invest heavily in relationships, choose kindness over cleverness, pursue work that feels purposeful rather than performative, and worry far less about the temporary storms that, in hindsight, never defined a life. What struck me most is how consistent their guidance is. No matter our background, profession, or ambitions, the patterns of a well-lived life are grounded in the same truths across generations.
After ten years of this book-sharing tradition, I've loved how each year's selection becomes a personal reflection point—and an opportunity to share something I've learned that has made an outsized impact on my life, hoping it might do the same for you. 30 Lessons for Living fits this theme perfectly. At a time when our culture endlessly pushes speed, optimization, and comparison, this book slows the pace and recenters us on what endures. The elders' insights have helped me refocus on being more intentional with the people I care about, more present in my daily experiences, and more anchored to the values that make life meaningful—not just successful. My hope is that these lessons spark the same clarity, gratitude, and perspective for you as we head into a new year full of possibility.
Cheers to a Fun, Meaningful, and Purpose-Filled Year Ahead
